Production Plan: Casting and Roles

I will play the artist in the music video so the age of the character will be about 17 or 18 as I can relate to the age of the target audience of 18-24 because of the events that occur and most 18-24 year olds have experienced some of these for themsleves. They will be curious and want to live while they're young so do things that they regret almost perhaps sometimes making them vulnerable.

The roles allocated to the production team are as follows:

Director(s)- Georgette Fischer & Millie McIntosh

Camera Person(s)- Georgette Fischer & Millie McIntosh

Editor- Georgette Fischer

Music by the artist- Dodie Clark,  Party Tattoos.

Production Plan: Filming Schedule

Here is a brief summary of what the next few weeks will involve.

Production Plan: Props and Costume

In order to gather props and organise the dress code,  I looked at the shots in the storyboard. Simple props such as glitter, confetti cannons, black lipstick alcohol bottles and  prjector for the tattoos. As the music video was quite literal it was easy to find props to use to match the lyrics. Other props may be used that aren't in the lyrics or storyboard to keep the narrative flowing.

For the costume, I decided to relate to the age of the character and the target audience and as I am the same age as them I know what is fashionable. Dungarees, vans, a top and coat (relating to the lyrics) is in fashion at the moment and suits the indie vibe of the music video.

Production Plan: Equipment

The main piece of equipment I will be using is a Canon DSLR 700D camera in which will help me film in a high resolution, helping my music video have a more professional finish.

There are various lenses I will use so that they were suitable for the different shots encorporated; 50mm- for changing the depth of field and focus, 55-250mm- the average camera zoom lens and 18-55mm for wide angle so useful for long and establishing shots.

To get the correct lighting along with natural daylight, I will use a ring light as it is good for portraiture and helps give an even amount of light on the subject so that it isn't too harsh. Another light I could use is a studio soft box light as they are also soft lights.

I could perhaps use some other light filters such as silver or gold lighting discs to add shimmer which is similar to the effect of light leaks.

Drafts And Designs of CD Covers

Here are my initial designs for my CD cover that I created by using a software at home called ArtRage and they were digitally sketched out using my Wacom graphics tablet and pen.

When I opened the application, I selected the size to be that of an average CD cover would be which is around 4.724 inches so I rounded it to 4.7 inches each side. The text at the top and bottom was pre-selected and cannot be changed. I tried to handwrite the title but it didn't look right or how I intended it to.

I experimented with the different colours included in my colour scheme. My first thoughts for my designs were to be quite illustrative and hand drawn to suit the style of both the song, and music video but changed my mind when I couldn't get the effect that I wanted.

Pitch

I helped create a Prezi to present our ideas creatively and unlike a  PowerPoint, is more interactive and interesting to look at. The aesthetics of this particular Prezi has what looks like ink in the background which relates to the title of the music video: Party Tattoos.

First of all, we played the audio of the song to allow the audience to give us some of their ideas for the video before telling them our ideas and it also gave them a taste of the style of music video we would produce.
Dodie Clark- Party Tattoos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JtISvgf2Aw
The original video isn't an official video and is just some visual effects to make the video more interesting. The original artist had written and played her own music and in this case played the ukulele. If this was the original video then it would be a performance as she is playing live and singing.

Next we asked what the target audience for our music video may be. The response was young, indie girls aged between 18-24. We had previously researched the potential target audience using YouGov but as the artist, Dodie Clark, isn't too well known so chose to research Birdy as her style is similar therefore would attract an alike audience. The result that we got was: Females of the age between 18 and 24 mainly enjoyed her music and has the social grade of C2DE, which is the last 3 classes of the social grading system, mostly made up of the working class.

We talked through how we interpreted the lyrics and made some notes on the initial ideas we had for the narrative and shots just from reading through the lyrics and we interpreted the them in a few ways. The first time we read through the lyrics we thought that the song was about having regrets from actions from the past and coming to the realise that some have negative, permanent consequences if they're not thought through properly, much like how tattoos are permanent and you can regret having a tattoo. The line 'regret it when we are old with wrinkled up skin' made me think of how tattoos fade and look different when the skin is wrinkled. The other narrative that I thought of was the mistakes made in the party scene and instead of regretting them, learning from them which I took from the line 'we're not bruised, they're just party tattoos' and 'regret it when we are old with wrinkled up skin'. We interpreted it as that you should life to the fullest and regret it later on rather than wish you had more fun as a teenager.

The next slide was entitled 'song choice' in which we briefly spoke about the song. It was written, performed, filmed and posted by YouTuber, Dodie Clark who wrote this song for the ukulele. The video in which she performs in isn't her official music video and instead is some artsy shots of her performing. Some of her shots include scribbles and lines on her images which we was inspired by and used Adobe AfterEffects to recreate them for our video.

We conducted a questionnaire to use the feedback from the audience to improve my music video based on their preferences. The questions also helped me understand my target audience better in case we  needed to make any adjustments to suit them. The first three questions asked for the audience to specify their gender, age and favourite artist so that we was able to get an idea for the range of genres that the different age and gender groups enjoy. The next question was 'What sort of music videos are you interested in?' The first option was 'Live footage of an artists/ band' which refers to the performance style in which an artist or band would be filmed 'performing' or playing instruments in a studio to either an audience or the camera. The second option was 'Storyline' and indicates the narrative aspect of a music video which usually follows a storyline usually linking to the lyrics or the meaning behind the song. The final option was 'clips linking to lyrics' which suggested that the images would relate directly to the lyrics making the video very literal.

Responses to the Questionnaire:
There were 5 female and 6 males that responded to the questionnaire, all at the age of 17.
The favourite songs/artists were a range of different artist and genres such as: 'She's Electric' - Oasis, Drake, Twenty One Pilots,  'American Boy'- Estelle ft. Kanye and Emma Blackery.
The majority of audience preferred a narrative in a storyline followed by clips linking to lyrics so we decided to use the literal clips merged in with a storyline so that we are fulfilling the audience's wants.
We found that people of my age group don't watch music videos very often as the majority selected the option 'every once in a while' which may mean that the audience age viewing our music video may change as the older and younger ages may watch them more, perhaps expanding the audience of our music videos.
The most popular platforms for the average 17 year old to listen to music on is YouTube and Spotify as the most popular followed by Deezer and Apple Music perhaps as there are options to use the apps for free even if there is limitations to using the free versions, many 17 year olds usually have a part time job at minimum wage so can't always afford t pay for music apps monthly.

The next question was 'How often do you watch music channels?' in order to get an idea of how many people would watch the music video. As technology has developed, more people are using the internet to view music videos on sites such as 'YouTube', so I would therefore consider uploading my music video on the internet so that the audience and views are increased. One of the most popular music channels on tele and for my target audience is MTV as it has the latest songs and videos therefore keeping the youth up to date.

This links to the final question which asks 'What platform do you use to listen to music?' with the options: YouTube; Streaming apps (Spotify, Deezer); Music channels on TV; and CDs.

The next slide is a mood board of images that I could use as inspiration, with the first image being of some fairy lights photographed using a bokeh effect. The images of glitter and confetti came to mind after deciding to use a narrative based around a party and confetti, glitter and party poppers are usually present on the party scene therefore wanted to include them. The image of a projection was also imagery I wanted to include as the idea of tattoos and mistakes being permanent are present in the audio. The projections would be shone onto many people to emphasise on the message that everybody makes mistakes as their will be a group of people.
