Evaluation Question 2- How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

For my A2 media coursework I was required to make a real media product in which I chose to create a Music Video along with a magazine advert and digipak (Album Cover.)
For my digipak I had researched existing album covers in order to find what the average album cover looked like as well as looking at the artists music videos to see how they relate to each other. On the cover of the CD, is an image of the character that I portrayed to be to artist. I wore the same clothes for the photoshoot as I did while we were filming the music video for continuity but so that there is some sort of link to the video. The sun is setting in the background reflecting pastel colours into the sky which helped refer to my colour scheme of pastel colours that were featured both in music video and the rest of the digipak, I used this colour scheme so that there was a reference to Dodie and her current music videos. Within the digipak was a selection of images of props/costume of items that were incorporated in the music videos somewhere but will have to look closely to see them- I presented them against pastel coloured backgrounds to link back to the main cover. This image of some floral patches were sewn onto the back of the outfit that was worn to achieve the ‘indie/alternative’ look of the video and they weren’t to obvious to the audience would have to look closely to notice them, engaging them more with the video.

For my magazine advert, I used a similar image to that of the CD cover but with slightly different composition to allow the audience to see the relation between the ancillary texts. I even added an image of the the front cover of the digipak to advertise it. The most obvious link is the title of the song and artist name that appear on the magazine advert, CD cover and at the beginning of the music video but to make a clearer link that I had created all three, I should have made the fonts similar to the title in the music video in order to maintain consistency. The font that appears in the main product reflects more of the artsy side of Dodie that I tried to recreate which would have been more suited to surface on the ancillary texts. I thought deeply about the order of my digipak as I was using a certain colour scheme so had to think about which colour panels would work next to each other when it is folded and put together so that it is aesthetically pleasing for the audience. If I was to professionally print my digipak, it would be on matte paper as I find that pastel colours look better as a flat colour rather than adding a shine on glossy paper like what they’re usually printed.

As Dodie is only recently an up and coming artist she doesn’t have a digipak that I could look at for inspiration, so I looked at her CD cover for her singles ‘Party Tattoos’ and ‘Intertwined.’
Both of the titles are written in doodly fonts but the one for her ‘Intertwined’ EP is what I used as inspiration for the font in my music video. They both also look like they have a ‘foggy’ effect over the top of the image which I used to dull down the sharpness of the colours in my magazine advert and CD cover but is also why I used light leak effects over some of the scenes. The slight border around the second image helps simplify the cover a bit more so i wanted to use this in my digipak but made it so that the image was the same length as the ‘pages’ but didn’t fill the top or bottom so I could add the pastel colours in. I tried to include fairy lights in my digipak but the images came out too dark and I also designed fairy lights to be on one of my draft covers. Dodie is on the front cover of all her images for her songs and wanted my artist to follow something similar so included my artist on the front cover also.

Overall the combination of my media products and ancillary texts are very effective as each product contains an element from another whether it be colour scheme or images that relate to the music video. By using aspects from each products also allows the audience to see a clear relation between the different products which would maybe boost sale productions too.
